From September 15th – October 15th there will be numerous celebrations throughout Central Florida for Hispanic Heritage Month. This is a wonderful way to not only enjoy various types of food, drinks and music – it’s also an opportunity to learn about the different Hispanic cultures. The 15th is the date that coincides with the anniversary of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua declaring their independence. The 16th of September marks Mexico’s Independence Day.

Growing up in a border city I was always surrounded by the Mexican culture and traditions. I danced Folklorico (traditional Mexican folk dancing) from ages 5-18, so 16 de Septiembre was a huge deal with events throughout El Paso. I feel that because of the city, my parents and my grandparents I was always immersed in all things Mexico. It was only when I moved to Florida in my early 20’s that I explored outside of my comfort zone that I was exposed to other cultures.

If you are looking for ways to celebrate and partake in the festivities, there are several events and concerts taking place throughout the city:

It’s important to me that my daughter learns the history of her heritage. For me the goal is not just to share family stories, but also teach her about those who made a real impact on our culture and our country. PBS is offering really insightful programming this month ranging from celebrity and athlete profiles to entrepreneurs, inventors and politicians.
