srpkidssocialmediagraphic-01On June 11, the Orange County Library system launches another fantastic summer reading program with more than 1,000 events, classes, technology camps and more. From June 11 through Aug. 13, all 16 of our branches offer fun, fascinating and educational events. Your kids could meet gator wranglers from Orlando’s famous Gatorland attraction, learn the basics of programming modifications in Minecraft, create digital artwork and 2D animations, attend kids’ concerts and tons more.

No other organization in the county provides high quality, free programming on such a massive scale.

According to the National Summer Learning Association, “all young people experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer.” It’s called the “summer slide” – kids who don’t participate in summer educational programs don’t retain the information they learned in the classroom, and they test lower on standardized tests at the end of summer than they did during the school year.

OCLS is here to help!

Join us for weekly special events featuring fitness, wellness, science, animals, arts and storytelling. A wide assortment of STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) camps and classes will be offered including coding, robotics, digital media and sewing.

Local radio station MIX 105.1 FM will help get the party started this summer with fun, interactive events for the entire family at the library from June 11 – July 1. Bring the whole family for music, games, prizes and more! Complete the Reading and Activity Calendar for a goody bag and to enter the Grand Prize Drawing to win prizes a Kindle Fire or a bicycle, as well as tickets to Fun Spot, Crayola Experience, Central Florida Zoo and lots more.

Teens can get in the game by exploring fitness, technology, book clubs and contests too.  Is your teenager interested in anime art? In June, we have artist Carlos Nieto coming to do a special session on learning anime drawing called Anime Your Way, and our Animanga club meets the third Thursday of every month. Video games? Kids enrolled in the video-game design camp learn to create their own video games. We also have classes where teens can learn to record and mix music, film and edit movies, learn to sew and tons more.

Start the summer off right at our Summer Kickoff After Hours event at the Orlando Public Library on June 11 at 7 p.m. with live music, food, gaming and other fun activities. For each program or class you attend, receive an entry to the Grand Prize Drawing for a chance to win some fantastic prizes.
