American Girl is introducing Luciana Vega, the 2018 Girl of the Year. She comes with an out-of-this-world storyline about an 11-year-old who dreams of being the first person on Mars. American Girl worked with NASA, including a task force of advisors (scientists, astronauts, and more below) who helped ensure the accuracy and authenticity of Luciana’s world—from her story and products to a STEM-based educational program in partnership with Scholastic and Space Camp.

Looking beyond her cool line of space-inspired products (like a Mars habitat and flight suit!), American Girl’s purpose behind this character is what’s most important. Luciana shows what it can mean to be a girl of strong character today, where creative thinking, collaboration, and STEM literacy provide opportunities for meaningful growth and development. Technology continues to revolutionize what we do and what we know, and Luciana is a character that can bring visibility and valuable lessons to girls at a time in their lives when they’re learning about their infinite potential to change the world.

Bringing this story to life is an all-star advisory board that includes: Dr. Ellen Stofan, former NASA Chief Scientist, Dr. Deborah Barnhart, CEO and Executive Director of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, Maureen O’Brien, Manager of Strategic alliances at NASA, and Dr. Megan McArthur Behnken, NASA Astronaut.

To celebrate her launch, AG is hosting Luciana debut events at its retail locations nationwide on January 1. The event features interactive science demonstrations, a Moon Phase craft, galaxy-inspired treats, and a free Luciana doll tee to take home. For more details, visit americangirl.com/retail .

  1. I would love to win this doll for my niece! This doll is so inspiring, and my niece has an interest in STEM, so she would love this doll so much!

  2. I would love to win Luciana Vega for my daughter Violet who has a birthday next month. She is all about science and experiments/STEAM. (She has an extensive rock collection!) Violet loves to play with dolls and doesn’t have an American Girl Doll yet so I am sure she would adore Luciana. Thanks for the chance.

  3. I would love to win for my niece. She loves American Girl! She is 8 yrs old and is saving up her money so that she can buy herself an American Girl doll. I would love to surprise her with one. Plus Luciana Vega is an astronaut! How coolers can you get?!

  4. Like many parents on this site, my daughter loves space and science. This doll and her accessories, such as the maker table and the telescope really allow the imagination to flourish. I’m excited for this doll and hope to win one for my daughter to show her girls can do great in science too.
