Welcome to the second feature in our Orlando Moms Make series! One of the greatest things about our city is that we mamas LOVE to encourage one another! A fantastic way to do so is to support our local “mom-preneurs.” Shopping local is such a powerful way to have a direct impact on our City Beautiful. (And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love shopping?!)  So in an effort to make these two important tasks easier for you, the Orlando Moms Make series will highlight a fantastic group of moms in the area who have taken their craftiness and artistic flairs, and created successful businesses for themselves.

> Tell me a little about yourself and what inspired you to open up your shop.

I am the Betsy behind Heavens to Betsy Calligraphy. I married my high school sweetheart and am momma to my daughter, Sadie, who will be 2 this fall. I’ve always loved lettering and learned the art of calligraphy about 3 years ago via Melissa Esplin’s “I Still Love Calligraphy” online course. Yep, I learned calligraphy online – nuts, I know! As I learned and practiced, I was looking for a way to share what I was doing and loved the idea of creating address stamps. I’m a homebody and I love creating a home with my people and having a pretty return address stamp is part of that for me.

> What can OMB readers look forward to seeing in your shop?
Mostly I create wooden stamps for addresses or celebrations, but I also will have a print or two in there from time to time.

> What is your favorite thing about living in Orlando?

Being close to the beach and lots of great parks, plus the added benefit of great food and shopping!  There is so much more to Orlando than Disney (which I also love) and I think people who don’t live here are starting to figure that out.

> Alright, you mentioned you love the Orlando food scene. That’s one of my favorite things about living here too! Name your top three most delicious places in town.

For date night, Cask and Larder. As a southern girl they totally get me over there: the hot chicken, their pepper jelly, the homemade ice cream–I love it all! For an afternoon iced coffee, Palmano’s on Park Avenue. My BFF introduced me to this almond milk coconut latte and it is THE perfect drink for FL from about May -October, so refreshing! For Saturday morning breakfast, The Townhouse. A classic diner with delicious food and sweet people. They even have chickens waddling around outside!
> What are some encouraging words that you would give to other moms pursuing their handmade business dreams?
I think having a passion for something outside of being a mom is super important! As much as I am crazy about being a mom, I need an outlet for myself. So find something you love doing and pursue it, even if creating a business isn’t in the cards, carving out some “me time” is just as important. And if you are starting a business, set realistic goals and be patient–nothing happens overnight.

>>To celebrate moms everywhere, Betsy has offered to giveaway one custom wooden name stamp, for one very special OMB reader! (Super sweet, right?!) Giveaway runs until Monday, August 3rd 11:59p.m. Winner will be announced on Tuesday, August 4th, 2015.
