This might make me sound pretty unfun, but sometimes I just don’t know what to do with my kids. Like, they aren’t the best conversationalists yet, and there are only so many times that I can keep sending my daughter into the backyard to re-cook my pretend food (I am a very picky customer when it comes to mud pie, OK).

Some days I am like Look at me, Mrs. Creativity over here, but other days I am scraping the bottom of the crafty barrel.

So I have come up with a pretty good solution: quirky, oddball, and otherwise ridiculous holidays. These themes let me loosely plan around something fun without making it serious. They feel new and novel to my daughter, so she is way more excited for them than just any old day. What is better than making almost every day a holiday?

Now you are probably saying, “But February already has a holiday? What about Valentine’s Day? Huh?” I know, I know, but you can only glue glittery hearts to construction paper so many times. That is why February also has Thank Your Mailman Day on the 5th and Make a Friend Day on the 11th. Depending on your kids’ ages, they can come up with their own ideas to celebrate, or you can give them a fun activity.

Don’t feel like you have to get all Pinteresty with these, or even be exact about dates. The point of quirky holidays is to be loose and inspire some spontaneous fun. Maybe your kids give Spike a nice bath to celebrate Love Your Pet Day or make puppets out of paper bags for Tell a Fairy Tale Day. They can learn everything there is to know about that favorite snack on Tortilla Chip Day. You can even add your own holidays! Maybe you want to celebrate Wizard of Oz Day or Thank Your Publix Sub Maker Day.

Here is a list of some quirky holidays you can celebrate in February (you can even print it out!):

  • 2 Groundhog Day
  • 3 Carrot Cake Day
  • 5 Thank Your Mailman Day
  • 8 Make a Friend Day
  • 10 Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day
  • 14 Valentine’s Day
  • 17 Random Acts of Kindness Day
  • 20 Love Your Pet/ Love Animals Day
  • 24 Tortilla Chip Day
  • 26 Tell a Fairy Tale Day
  • 28 Strawberry Day
