Small Business Saturday

Ahhhhh… Thanksgiving is finally among us! A day filled with family, food, laughter, the Macy’s Parade and of course, football. Quickly followed by Black Friday SHOPPING!!!! {I am totally against shopping on Thanksgiving Day, but hey, that’s just me.} And then, there’s Small Business Saturday. Oh, you’ve never heard of Small Business Saturday? You’re not alone! Let me be the first to tell you what an awesome concept it is!

Small Business Saturday is an American shopping holiday held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year.

Fun Fact: The first Small Business Saturday was observed in Roslindale Village, Massachusetts on November 27, 2010.

shop-smallIt is a counterpart to Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and now #GivingTuesday (we will get to that in my next post- so stayed tuned!). Originally sponsored by American Express corporation, Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are small and local. Small Business Saturday is now a registered trademark of American Express corporation.

#ShopSmall is one of the hashtags used on social media and it is representative of all the small businesses that are participating in Small Business Saturday. So you can search the #shopsmall hashtag to find local businesses to shop with!

Check out the American Express page dedicated to this Shop Small movement and support our local small businesses while you are doing your holiday shopping!

Have you participated in Small Business Saturday before? If so, shout out who you #shopsmall with in the comments below!
